Former England captain John Terry strongly criticised Thomas Tuchel’s World Cup squad selection during a recent TV appearance. He stated that to achieve good results at this World Cup, at least 11 players in the 26-man England squad are not competitive enough to feature in matches.
“I have always believed England must bring its strongest possible lineup. Only around thirteen or fourteen players are truly capable of taking on key roles if we aim to compete for the World Cup title. As for the rest of the squad, I do not think they can create healthy competition within the first team,” Terry said.
“I have great respect for Thomas Tuchel. During his time in charge of Chelsea, he led the club to win the UEFA Champions League and his coaching ability is widely recognised. I also admire his courage to make tough decisions, which is clearly reflected in this squad list.”
“Nevertheless, I cannot agree with his selections for the upcoming World Cup. Harry Maguire and left-back Luke Shaw are the first two names that come to mind. Now the team has called up young full-back Riley. In my opinion, a seasoned player like Luke Shaw should stay alongside him to steady his nerves and offer guidance, as this young talent is part of England’s long-term plan for future World Cup campaigns.”
“The exclusion of Cole Palmer has also sparked huge controversy. Overall, Thomas Tuchel has made three or four major mistakes in picking players for key positions. To go further in the World Cup, we have to bring in the very best players available.”
When talking about Harry Maguire, Terry added: “I believe Maguire is a better player than Dan Burn. Even if our regular defenders pick up injuries, I would still prefer to bring on Maguire as a substitute rather than John Stones.”
“What’s more, Maguire poses a big threat in attacking set pieces late in games. I admit Dan Burn also has that strength as a left-back, but after careful consideration, Maguire is still my first choice.”
